I have used Astrometry.net before to identify fieldsbut it never ocourred to meto use it on images on printed plates. I tried one of the other plates (Feige 72). I just captured it, converted it to a negative image and then submitted it. Asrtometry.net identified it without any problems. I tried it as a positive image but the source detection software did not understand this. You can check how well it is doing by looking at the x-y source FITS image. It's very much a recommended website as far as I am concerned.

You can also use it to identify those slides you took of the sky and forgot to label ! I have used it to locate the stars in an image with a fireball on it.

By the way, Ursa Minor rarely symbolizes Callisto's son. He is usually represented by the constellation of Bootes, who holds back Canes Venatici not to attack his mother. Ursa Minor instead is Callisto's faithful servant, who followed her to the sky.

You wondered why our star Bears have long tails. Well actually, according to the legend, Zeus resqued Callisto from her son by grabbing her tail and pulling her up into the sky, away from the deadly arrow. Because of that her tail stretched.

Yup!

We had 180 orbits to determine a Cepheid distance to the Coma cluster. Unfortunately, the Advanced Camera for Surveys died in the middle of our observation interval.

The Hubble Heritage team took our images and a couple of their own and combined them to produce the beautiful image in the link.

Cheers,
Doug

What's the official name of the Argentinian Water Particle Detector Thing? I'd like to find out more.
Thanks, Andrew
PS Do you do show notes?

I don't like four percent of the IAU, most of whom are not planetary scientists, defining science for me or anyone else. Kudos to New Mexico for this declaration. Pluto is a planet because it is large enough to be rounded by its own gravity, and it orbits the Sun. In spite of the IAU's nonsensical and controversial definition, dwarf planets are planets too!

I had just pt the weights on, when my dog took off to chase a ???.
His leash took down my tripod, broke the xxxx out of it.(8" Meade SCT)
Good thing I hadn't put tube on it yet.
If that's a 'good' thing.
Gonna try to duct tape my solar filter to my 8" Dob.

It's fun to speculate, isn't it, elgenubi2003? Empty spacetime has no mass, though. Also, we know the universe is not expanding at or near the speed of light, <a href="http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/~huchra/hubble.plot.dat" rel="nofollow">we measure the expansion rate</a>, called the Hubble Constant, and it is 65 +/- 10 km/sec/Mpc.

If you are interested in cosmology I highly suggest you read Barbara Ryden's "Introduction to Cosmology".

From any given perspective in the universe, the cosmos appears to expand at a higher rate the farther away one looks (inflationary model). This means that at some distance in equal directions from any given observation point, the universe will be expanding at near-light speed. According to relativity theory, mass approaches infinity as the speed of light is approached, as occurs at the event horizon around a singularity. Therefore, each point in the universe is surrounded by a 'singularity sphere' that approaches infinite mass. The observed acceleration of expansion is due to the fact that all objects are 'falling outward' and accelerating toward this sphere.

Hey, guys. Mars attacked in 2003. That's only six years ago. I did the math back then. It was 25.1 arc seconds. The Moon is typically 30 arc minutes - which is 30 * 60 = 1800 arc seconds. 1800 / 25.1 = 71.2x. So, i borrowed the club 8 inch (200 mm) SCT, and brought it to the big 2 day Astronomy at the Beach star party, and i showed some fraction of the 13,000 people who showed up - Mars at 100x. Bigger than the Full Moon (naked eye). And, the original idea was, look at the Moon naked eye, and that's the kind of detail to expect on Mars. See the dog on the Moon made up by the maria? That's the kind of thing to expect on Mars.

Next opposition is in January, 2010. It won't be as big as 2003, so you'll want to crank the power up a bit more. And, of course, wear your electric sox. Or, check it out from Australia.

Your eyes, if they're good, can see detail, pixels, if you will, to about 3 arc minutes. So think of the Moon as maybe 10 pixels across. It's not much.

I've not gotten a copy of the Mars email in a couple years. If someone wants to send me a copy, my username at yahoo will work. Don't worry that i might get too many.

So, i got to see the scar on Jupiter (not just Harry's head) and Mike didn't? Well, i live south of the wedge - a weather pattern here in Michigan. So he might not have gotten the chance that i did. It happens, though mostly the North side is clear.

Every filter change required me to climb a very tall ladder!

I put 'my love' into google and this cam up on the page. I have no particular love for astronomy but what you were saying about passions and changing stages of life really hit home. I am 23 years old just about to turn 24. So a pup really. I just got engaged, have my first real job living in Korea...I'm Scottish and I'm studying for my MA in history part time. At the moment, for the first time, I am having to make those hard choices which end up not being choices about time, money and passions and wondering if I am making the right choices. Its nice to see a more seasoned campaigner (in the nicest possible way) and know that with change the passions don't have to die they just go on a backburner. This is possibly the least astronomy (yes I did nearly type astrology) related post ever on this site. Cheers, Colette

Like you I took years out for family, retired here on the lake I've come to since 1949 and built our retirement house and observatory. Not one light visible for miles and only about 30 residents of the entire township. Now I can stay out of the cold in winter and skeeters in summer. Automation makes getting the data easy. Processing it is another matter. I'm always months behind.

Your post is so timely. This morning we finally had clear skies when it was still dark outside at 6am as I picked up the newspaper. I wondered at why I wasn't getting outside to just look up and marvel. Pictures are great, but this is real with my own eyes.

So I took a few minutes to take in the dippers and the teapot. I checked out the Summer Triangle hinting at starry nights while camping. The moon was just bright enough to wash out the Milky Way.

Michael, you can observe the sky from your driveway and with your kids. Mine don't remember seeing Comet Hale-Bopp, but they enjoyed it while it was here. Most of their observing is naked eye.

Even young kids can easily find Orion, and he's up in the evening and part of the Globe at Night project.

Keep in touch with the stars. They'll wait.

Your post sounds like me, with out the BS degree. I'm a tad older as my first astronomy books were arguing over spiral galaxies being planetary systems forming -- my book came down on that side though by the time I read it Hubble had long since settled the issue. My moon book came down on the side of volcanoes for craters etc. Unfortunately when I moved to northern MN those were disposed of. Big mistake.

I also am at the observatory every clear night, even as I type this, but I run it from inside so am working even at -40. BTW -15F is -26C. +15f is -9.4C

Dude. You've got a telescope and don't know ANYONE ELSE with one?

Yes, i've seen Lulin. The light pollution at my house and/or crappy finder charts prevented me from finding it in my xt10i (xt10 in cold weather). But one of the guys brought his 8" dob to a club meeting, and several of us saw it, until our toes froze.

Yes, I've seen it a few times. It was hard to spot when it was roughly between Spica and Saturn. But when it was closer to Saturn, it was an easy find with 20x80 binoculars. Some people say that it is naked eye, but for me it was just a hint of a lighter area that could be my imagination. 7x50 binoculars didn't show much detail.

It was best for me on February 23, 24, and 25 when it was near Saturn. The center was concentrated, and I could faintly see the tails in both directions. I needed the 20x80 binocs to see that much.

If you missed it, realize that it wasn't nearly as good as Hale-Bopp, Hyakutake, or Holmes. But for me it was better than Halley.

What's with all the H names for comet discoverers?!

I am a professional lighting designer (indoor and outdoor) and an amateur astronomer. Having just reviewed the IDA's Model Lighting Ordinance, I agree that this is a very good thing that they are doing. Working on a recent retail project near Siding Spring Observatory, the local council had a code (at least they were aware of the issue) but it was quite poorly written by people who were trying to do the right thing but didn't have the technical knowledge to achieve their goal. As a result, the code failed to provide developers with guidelines and restrictions that were reasonable and quantifiable, and it failed to adequately project dark skies. The Model Lighting Ordinance will definitely improve the protection of dark skies by making it easy for local councils to implement a robust code. Well done, IDA!

mnphenow: Someone spraying light in all directions on an adjacent property definitely impacts on my ability to use my property as I wish (eg, for astronomy). Shouldn't I have protection from that? Councils setting an example is not enough, developers need to be rail-roaded into being considerate neighbours (I know, I work for a lot of them).

A couple years ago members of my club were able to convince a local town to avoid chandelier style street lighting, and instead opt for sanity. Better lighting for less up front, and less in the future. I don't think light pollution was mentioned. But growth in that direction has made it worse for the observatory. No getting around it.

I agree that this issue is a total no-brainer. In fact, my city council (in Osseo) is considering new streetscape lighting and just the other day I emailed my mayor, explaining this issue to him and pointing him to the many great resources on the subject.

Of course, you know I can't very well completely agree with you on anything. I vehemently disagree that cities should create or modify ordinances concerning light pollution. Cities themselves should make the right choices of lighting fixtures, for economic reasons and for all of the other great reasons. They should set a good example for their neighbors. They should join us in educating the public on this issue. They should not impose new restrictions on people's right to use their own property as they wish, so long as they do not injure or damage the property of their neighbors.

George nailed it... his theme for 365 is exactly as he described wanting it to be:

- Not like Enya
- Can hear once a day without being too annoying
- Initially funny, then annoying
- Then its that kinda thing where you have to hear it because its catchy and you like to sing along to it..

Fanbloodytastic. Thanks George.

I think I'm about a week behind on listening, but they've been mostly great. There's some variability, but I think I've learned something with each show.

On the carbon star one, I should have realized I needed a telescope to see it as reddish. My 20x80 binoculars could show it but only faintly.

I liked the variable star nomenclature and your big numbers podcast. I used the big numbers with my son later that day - adding the exponents. We both *knew* that you could do that, but you provided context.

Aaron, I couldn't manage to post on your new blog. Interesting topic. As someone who didn't finish my dissertation, let me give you a word of advice - concentrate on it and get it done. It's so easy to be distracted. But do that after you get done.

I ran across a <a href="http://e.webring.com/hub?ring=the3dstereophoto" rel="nofollow">3D stereo photography web ring</a> that may have some helpful links.

I really like doing stereo without the glasses.

I'd think that getting astronomical images from sufficiently different locations may be a problem. Good idea to use simulations.

Hmm, the HST news got out before the news from the Gemini. I guess the reason for the embargo was to release the news on both discoveries on the same day.

Regardless, this is a date in history, November 13,2008 that will be as remembered as well as the date March 13, 1781, when William Herschel discovered Uranus.

Bravo!

Without regard to what the accelerometer said, the GPS should have given you the correct altitude. If what you want to do is retrieve the iPhone, then have it send the GPS right after apogee, then maybe just before landing. You can get these points from the GPS altitude. You don't have to stream the data in real time. The iPhone has enough memory for a few data points.

I would call this project an "iPhone killer app". Of course, yours survived. What they say is "if at first you don't succeed, then sky diving is not for you."

Great stuff!

The iPhone 3G uses the LIS331DL accelerometer which has a user configurable range of ±2g or ±8g. The FS ("full scale") measurement range in Table 3 of the LIS331DL datasheet shows that when the FS bit is set to 0, the "typical" range is ± 2.3g which looks pretty much like where your accelerations maxxed out. So you basically have no idea what the true acceleration was during the ascent phase once it got beyond +2.3g. The good news is that this implies your iPhone went higher than the altitude you get just integrating the vertical acceleration curve twice.

Cheers,
Doug

Michael, building a rocket and using your iPhone to collect and broadcast data about the launch is not very slacker-like. It's far too cool. Fun stuff.
<p>
I liked the idea that you planned to use the data to be able to track down the iPhone like a geocache. But it sounds like you don't have data for the last part of the descent.
</p><p>
Keep us posted on your progress.</p>

When I saw the title of this post, I thought, "It went supernova????" I didn't know about this recurring event. You learn something new every day. I'd put the quote marks around the "annual".

The 5.5 year cycle is discussed <a href="http://etacar.umn.edu/etainfo/cycle/" rel="nofollow">here</a> at the site Michael suggested.

What a great point she made. When that whole debate of whether or not Pluto was a planet or not gave me a headache. The naming convention she puts forward just makes so much sense.

I believe that governments need to be a substantial source of support for science research and science education. Businesses will support what is in their immediate best interest. Individuals and foundations can only fund so much. That leaves it to the government. Education and basic research are both important
<br />But there's only so much money, so peer review is critical.
<br />And that's why funding something like the Adler Planetarium's new projector through an earmark that's not reviewed seems wrong. They do get a lot of support through <a href="http://www.adlerplanetarium.org/support/foundation/index.shtml" rel="nofollow">public and private sources</a>. I realize that a new projection system is a big item, but go about getting it the appropriate way.
<br />The National Science Foundation and other parts of the government fund a lot of science in the US. You need to show results, but lesser known scientists can get funding.
<br />I'm optimistic that whichever candidate is elected will pay more attention to and value science more highly than the current president. They both claim they will. You can look at
<br /><a href="http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues/CBCD3A48-4B0E-4864-8BE1-D04561C132EA.htm" rel="nofollow">McCain's Technology Plan</a> and <a href="http://www.barackobama.com/issues/technology/" rel="nofollow">Obama's Technology Plan</a>
<br />Personally, despite disliking the attempt to use an earmark to fund the projector rather than go through other funding means, I'll be voting for Obama for many reasons including that I believe he'll take the country in the right direction.
<br />Disclaimer: I was supported by NASA and the Office of Naval Research while an undergraduate and graduate student and have worked on various projects funded by the National Science Foundation.

I don't have the time to read Emily's Planetary Society blog every day, but I enjoy it and learn something every time I read it. That is a great post. The comparative photo is wonderful. Thank you for pointing us there.
<p></p>
In my spare time (none), I should make sure each of the bodies mentioned have an entry in Slackerpedia Gallactica.
<p></p>
I like her naming solution. Essentially, it forces us to use another term for the major planets and lets us use the more general term generally.

Do you mean PRI's The World?

The URL is http://www.theworld.org/technology

But I'm not sure which reporter you were referring to in your podcast.

I like that science cafes try to involve people who don't know that they would be interested in science. Those of us who are immersed in science forget that there are people who avoid it. That concept is great food for thought for me as I try to recruit young people into science careers.

You're welcome, Michael. How about explaining RR Lyraes to me, since I know jack about them, instead of playing Age of Conan.

Or is that too much to expect from a slacker?

:o)

Cheers,

Sure, you can take a look for yourself, but you'll need a pretty large telescope. The star is currently below 15th magnitude, so something in the 16"-20" range, or larger, would be advisable. And you'll need a better chart than the AAVSO one linked here, which is for a small telescope and only shows stars down to magnitude 10.

But, that said, FG Sge is certainly an amazing variable. I remember observing it in the 1970s, when it was an easy object in a small telescope. Even at that time, the idea that it seemed to be racing across the HR diagram like an express train seemed totally unbelievable.

Aaron, congratulations! Great explanation on the video, too.

Thank you, Michael for catching that on video and sharing it.

I disagree that Aaron could no longer be a Slacker Astronomer. Slackers know when to work hard and when to relax and not take themselves too seriously. Being a slacker is a state of mind.

You realize of course that Aaron's award goes against everything that is embodied in the word slacker. A more indicative poster would have had pizza stains on it, corrections in crayon, and would've been titled "Gettin' BZ in UMa"
