Lunar Eclipse 2008

Red Moon

I’ve always wanted to take a shot of the moon during a total eclipse because it is the only time you can get stars in the background. Usually the moon is so bright that it drowns out all the stars. So I snapped a few photos tonight with my wife’s digital SLR. It didn’t have as much zoom as I wanted but I still got a bit of the effect I was hoping for. Make sure you click the image to see the large size. I’m looking forward to looking at all the other images that are popping up around the net.

The eclipse was very nice here in Minneapolis although it was cold  at around -2F (-19C). Did you get a change to take a look?

  1. It was clear and cold here in Michigan as well. The whole story of the “The Great February 2008 Eclipse Adventure” is too long to post here as a comment, but fun was had, many photos were taken, and I was definitely cold. Although at mideclipse it was +6F at our observatory.

  2. I took some photos from Pennsylvania showing the Moon (and Saturn to its left) in Leo and closer-up with Regulus

I, too, wanted to capture the stars and moon together. My attempts to get some trees in there didn’t work as well as in Michael’s shot, but there are some in the full Leo photo.

We had snow falling until 8pm, so I was pleased to be able to watch the entire totality between roughly 10 and 11pm EST.

  3. Got to see it briefly from my window since I had things to take care of at home. Next time there’s an eclipse I’ll have to find out a week ahead of time so I can clear things up.

  4. I watched the first half of the eclipse (until just after totality) through a very clear sky from Youngstown, OH (yes, very cold here too). I did not take any pictures, but did hear that someone had commented the color was that of iced tea…
