Sirius is (siriously seriously!) the brightest star in the night sky. It lies in the constellation Canis Major. This binary star system has a main sequence star and a white dwarf star. It is often called the dog star.

Trivia

The phrase "dog days of summer" relates to the time of heliacal rising of Sirius, which occurs in August.
