Also, an informal name for the smallest of the main sequence dwarfs, more properly known as "dwarf M stars", where M is the coolest and reddest of the classical spectral types for normal stars. They have masses less than one third that of the Sun, and are smaller in physical size as well. These combine with their cooler temperatures -- about 2500-3500 Kelvin -- to make them intrinsically very faint. They have absolute magnitudes of 9 or greater. There are probably many of these undiscovered within 100 parsecs of the Sun, including that one there behind the expired jug of milk in your fridge.
