Pole Star
From Slackerpedia Galactica
A pole star is a star that don't appear to move in the sky. It is a star that sailors used to help them with navigation.
In the northern hemisphere, the current pole star is Polaris, which is a triple star system. Polaris is not exactly above the North Pole. It's position is off by about a half degree, or the width of the full Moon. But just like my clock which stopped, it is directly North twice a day.
Unfortunately, the southern hemisphere doesn't have a single pole star, so they must use a collection of stars to find due south.
