Oort Cloud
From Slackerpedia Galactica
The Oort Cloud is a spherical cloud around the Sun beyond the Kuiper Belt and is believed to be the furthest structure in the [[Solar System|solar system]. Debates (more like slapfights, actually) have broken out over where it lies exactly and the role it currently plays in solar system dynamics. Currently, long period comets seem to originate from the Kuiper Belt but since it would take an object from the Oort Cloud thousands of years to appear, we do not know if the Oort Cloud just sits there like a lazy bum or of it occasionally hurls pieces of itself at the Sun. It is believed that an early bombardment period in Earth's history is the result of the Oort could becomed gravitationally perturbed by a passing star, cloud of gas, etc.
Supposedly, it lies either inside or around the heliopause, where the solar particle wind gives way to galactic atomic debris and radiation. This may or not give clues as to whether the Oort Cloud is a shell of billions of stellar fragments that protect us from said galactic crap or if they are the gravitational playthings of nearby stars.
