Near Earth Object

A Near Earth Object (or NEO) is (usually) an asteroid which crosses the Earth's orbit.
Some of them have a chance to hit the Earth at times, as many have in the past. If there is a chance of this, it is assigned an impact hazard, which is called the Torino Scale.
There are many active programs currently which catalog and search for these objects, although more are needed. To get some much-needed media attention, they are also commonly known as Killer Asteroids.
For the uninitiated, these NEO's do not live in The Matrix.
