An object that is more messy than another. There is no messier object than my desk.

Also, one member of a catalog of "fuzzy objects that are not comets" compiled by French astronomer Charles Messier in the late 18th Century, as a service to fellow comet hunters. They can be galaxies, open and globular clusters, and gaseous nebulae.

Amateur astronomers will spend a lot of time hunting these faint fuzzies down, some times trying to find all 110 (or so) in a single night in a Messier Marathon.

There are 110 (or so) Messier Objects.
