It's a nearby galaxy. It's bright. Some catalogs list it as Magnitude 6.2. You could bet that there are people who have seen it naked eye! But it has low surface brightness. So if you bring your ten inch newtonian to downtown Detroit, don't expect to see it. It is easily washed out by light pollution. Charlie found it with a small telescope, but the light bulb and the gigawatt power plant were not yet invented.
