The International Astronomical Union is an organization of professional astronomers that eats baby planets. Their mission is "...to promote and safeguard the science of astronomy in all its aspects through international cooperation." They also like to make up funny words like "pluton". Unfortunately, it turns out that geologists think that "pluton" is quite a serious word.
Many astronomers believe that they are a bunch of mindless jerks who will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes. Interestingly enough, a copy of the Slackerpedia Galactica that came through a time warp from a thousand years in the future lists the IAU as "A bunch of mindless jerks who were first against the wall when the revolution came."
