Guidelines For Posting
From Slackerpedia Galactica
The goal is to create astronomy themed, Wikipedia-like pages that have a sense of humor and are fun to read. So when you doubt whether to do something, consider our goal.
- Must be fun and light hearted!
- Topic must be about astronomy, slacker astronomy or a topic that supports another entry on the site.
- Keep the facts straight and correct.
- Opinions are okay - encouraged, even. But no personal attacks or nasty language.
- Adult topics and innuendo are acceptable, but don't go overboard. Be discreet. Adult jokes are funnier that way.
- Try to link to the real Wikipedia entry at the bottom of each topic, when appropriate. (That way people can get some healthy, detailed info too.)
- You must be a logged in user! Yes, this is different than Wikipedia.
- When in doubt, refer to the rules of the real Wikipedia for help
- And have some fun!
Style Guidelines
The following are some style guidelines, I don't think they should be taken as the law but it would be good to get some consistency. If you have opinions on these or other issues post them on the Talk page.
Emergent Rules
The following guidelines are basically stating the current majority preference that is emerging on the site.
- Title words should all be capitalized, e.g. Averted Vision as opposed to Averted vision.
- Entry Titles should generally be singular rather than plural.
- Person names are Firstname Surname, e.g. Aaron Price as opposed to Price, Aaron.
- Slackerpedia contributors should keep their bio pages in the User namespace rather than the main namespace, e.g. User:Jorge rather than Jorge. There are some exceptions to this rule (i.e. members of the crew)
- Entries for organisations should be entered in full with a redirect from the acronym. For example American Association of Variable Star Observers, with a redirect from AAVSO.
Guidelines Requiring Consensus
The following are my own observations of some inconcistencies that I have noticed. I don't really mind either way I just think it would be good to get some consistency.
- When adding objects which have multiple designations we need to come up with an order of precedence. For example, we have two separate entries Andromeda Galaxy and M31. There should be a redirect in there somewhere, I think I prefer something like common name then Messier then NGC/IC etc. This would mean we'd have an entry for Andromeda Galaxy with redirects from M31 and NGC224. However, M74 which doesn't appear to have a common name would just go in as M74 with a redirect from NGC628.
- Do we want to mark fictious subjects as such or leave them as is? I can create a template along the lines of "The contents of this article have a dubious nature". For example, Astronomical Medical Conditions.
