Eridanus
From Slackerpedia Galactica
Introduction
"Eridanus was more usually connected to the myth of Phaƫton, who took over the
reins of Helios' (i.e. the Sun's) sky chariot, but didn't have the strength
to control it, and so veered wildly in different directions. The result was that
sometimes the chariot got too close to earth, creating desert and burning
people's skin (a myth they considered to explain the skin of the Ethiopians)."
According to Wikipedia, and you should always trust Wikipedia, this is one racist constellation.
Observation
Mostly a treat for those in the Southern Hemisphere, Eridanus comes into view for those in the Northern Hemisphere a bit during the winter although its brightest jewel, Achernar is a bit out of view. In the South, it hovers near Orion, Cetus, Phoenix, Hydrus, and Octans. Its proximity to so many constellations is due in no small part to its large size, although its peculiar shape makes it very hard to trace despite having two bright stars, Cursa (Beta Eridani) and Achernar (Alpha Eridani). Those with powerful telescopes can go hunting for the two dozen or so galaxies that are littered throughout this constellation.
