Comet 17P/Holmes is "the little comet that could". Over 42 hours in October 2007, the comet brightened from a magnitude of about 17 to about 2.8, and then became the biggest astronomical body in the Solar System when its gas cloud outgrew the size of the Sun.

It was discovered by the British amateur astronomer Edwin Holmes on 6 November 1892 and was lost after the 1899 and 1906 appearances until rediscovered on 16 July 1964 by Elizabeth Roemer (US Naval Observatory).
