"Comets are like cats, they have tails and they do precisely what they want."

- David Levy

A giant snowball that has to show off every time it gets near the Sun. Like Icarus, comets sometimes fly too close to the Sun and are never seen from again. Other comets go crazy and split up into baby comets. Some aren't very tidy and leave little pieces of themselves where we run into them year after year as meteor showers.

Long period comets (the ones that don't come around again) originate in the Oort Cloud. As a result, they are thought to be samples of material leftover from the formation of the solar system. A popular theory posits that cometary impacts in the early days of the Earth is the source of the water in our oceans. However, recent observations of bright comets show different d/h isotope ratios than those in Earth's oceans. So the jury is still out.

Some people, including Neil deGrasse Tyson, call Pluto "King of the Comets".
