Chile is a wonderful country with a history of some bad rulers. But then again, what country hasn't had a bad apple or two? Chile is kind enough to allow astronomers from other countries to build observatories in their mountains. The mountains are very high and very dry, making them great places for optical, infrared, and submillimeter work. This collaboration with the international community has helped many Chilean universities become cutting edge astronomical research centers.
