A Black Hole is a remnant of the death of a massive star. In astronomy, black holes come in 3 different sizes: Stellar Mass Black Holes, Intermediate Size Black Holes, and Super Massive Black Holes, which are at the centre of most Galaxies like our own. A Black Hole's gravity is so immense that nothing can escape it, not even light. While it is hard to see them, a Black Hole can be detected only when it feeds because it emits X-Rays. Which a X-Ray telescope like the Chandra X-Ray Observatory can detect.

Theoretically, black holes also exist in the micro and mini varieties which would be smaller than those of astronomical significance. Micro black holes could be created in the largest supercolliders, but wouldn't last long because they would evaporate. Mini black holes are bigger than micro black holes and smaller than stellar mass black holes. It might be possible to have a micro-mini black hole that you could hold in your hand, but they could be very dangerous if dropped as they would fall into the center of the earth and eventually eat us all up.
