The Big Bang

A Big Bang is what you get if you blow stuff up with enough nitroglycerin (see Mythbusters).

Alternatively, if you are really lucky, the ending of a really good date! Or a really bad date... if they bang you on the head (see also Slacker Laws regarding averted vision).

More likely...

In the beginning there was nothing, for an instant there was the singularity and then the Universe was born...

This is probably how the Universe began. However, it wasn't really a bang and it was actually really small to begin with, it didn't take long to get big though. The expansion was so rapid and powerful that it is still expanding today (see Hubble Constant), the rate of expansion is actually increasing (this has implications).

The name was coined by Fred Hoyle, he was a proponent of a different idea, the Steady State Model and he came up with the name Big Bang, during a radio interview, because he thought it was derogatory. The Big Bang supporters thought it was cool (they probably didn't say cool back in those days though) and it stuck.

There are some that think the Big Bang was the result of a big crunch (a prior universe collapsing). We might be the ultimate recycling project composed of material from a previous universe.
