The AAS is the second-largest professional society of astronomers in the world with around 6500 members. Membership is not restricted to astronomers in the United States and international astronomers can opt to join at the full rate (with full privileges) or a reduced rate (with some reduced privileges).

The AAS publishes two of the top four professional journals: the Astronomical Journal (AJ) and the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ).

The AAS holds two general meetings per year. One is normally held the 2nd week of January and the other the first week of June (with some exceptions). The winter meetings are usually larger than the summer meetings - except when the summer meetings are held in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Executive Director of the AAS is the totally cool Dr. Kevin Marvel, who is a friend of Slacker Astronomy.
