Amateur Astronomy Club
From Slackerpedia Galactica
A group of like-minded individuals who gather ostensibly to talk about astronomy and observe, but in reality just sit around and complain about the bad weather and cloudy skies. Warning: Aperture fever spreads rapidly in these environments.
Amateur clubs are usually based around cities or counties. The larger ones often have dark sky sites that are owned (or otherwise accessible) by club members. Typically they will meet once a month to talk about astronomy or hear a lecture, followed by observing.
It is highly recommended to visit your local amateur club(s) before buying a telescope. They will be able to give you the best advice and you'll also be able to look through their equipment and "test drive" potential scopes.
These clubs are also great fun for viewing meteor showers. When one has to stay up late doing nothing but looking at the sky, it is wise to have many people with whom to chat and share coffee.
Amateur clubs are responsible for most star parties too.
