Absolute Magnitude

The brightness of an object, measured in units of magnitude, if it were located at a distance of 10 parsecs from an observer. If would be a little difficult to cram a galaxy into a dot 10 parsecs away, but we still give these objects absolute magnitudes (around -20 for the normal-ish ones). The Sun's absolute magnitude is about +4.78.

Absolute magnitude was also a rejected "grunge-speak" phrase, for something totally grungy:

A: Dude, your wack slacks are the absolute magnitude!
